Sadness by ToonEGuy Sadness by ToonEGuy
These are just some random sketches I had done before while I was working. I'm not sure how I got the idea to draw them, but I'm glad I did cause it let me explore something very important for any cartoon... emotion. I think this is also the cleanest and most polished looking of my pencil sketches that I've uploaded here so far, and to be honest I was actually drawing sketches this good all the time before getting the internet (then I think I started getting lazy, but all this time I've spent at DeviantART has helped me pick myself back up again).

The first character obviously is Pikachu. It was only a year ago that I finally started to question hanging on to the Pokémon franchise the way it is now and felt the need to take a break from it, but since then I've started seeking out the anime in it's original Japanese form hoping that it would make it a different experience to watch, and I guess part of me didn't want to give up on something that could have achieved a lot more potential over in Japan. The first thing I had in mind was "Mewtwo Strikes Back" (my most favorite movie back when it came out, which I ALREADY knew had more potential than what 4Kids gave us), so I finally found the uncut version of the movie with subtitles... and it turns out I was right. I found it to be more darker and deeper than what I saw before. There was a backstory about a scientist trying to resurrect his daughter through cloning, there were references to God, better music, and the Japanese voices make all the characters sound like they can be taken seriously. There were also no more annoying dubbing mistakes like Scyther being called "Alakazam". Needless to say, it gave me some newfound respect for the anime by wanting to see it through Japan's point-of-view. I don't think it means I'll ever be chasing after more new games or collecting trading cards again back when I treated it like a fad, but if I can manage to sit through a few of the movies or early anime episodes this way then that's all the Pokémon I really need anymore.

Wow, that was long! ^^; Anyway, the 2nd character I have on here is Lisa Simpson. This was taken from the episode "Summer of 4ft 2" which was one of my favorite Lisa episodes because... well, I guess I always liked Lisa dressed in cool clothes 8-), but also because I felt bad for her in that episode and how she was desperately wanting to make new friends. A lot of the most emotional moments on the show seem to come from Lisa (this one being right up there with "Stark Raving Dad") and maybe that's one reason I seem to like drawing her so much. It's those kind of episodes that really show the heart of The Simpsons' writing, where you always care about the characters in their situations, which is something I fail to see in shows like Family Guy.

Finally, I drew a quick sketch of Bubbles from The Powerpuff Girls probably just because she tends to cry a lot on that show. This was from the episode "Octi Evil" where she says "I hate it when you guys fight!".

Right now I'm drawing a sequel to this called "Happiness" since I already had this one finished and sitting around for a long time.

aww those are really cute expressions!
I think that someone who is very good at crying in cartoons is Julie Kavner (am I spelling it right?). It sounds so real.

I saw 'Mewtwo Strikes Back' subtitled a few months before the awful modified version hit the theaters. Oh my gosh that end fight scene was heartrending in the original! 4Kids really sucked the soul right out of that movie.

I don't know too many people that have actually seen the original version of the movie before the english one was made. I've also heard that the movie was originally all 2D animation, but then they added a bunch of CGI effects later on that were what 4Kids used.

Yeah, they added lots of unnecessary 3d effects as well as that nonsense about a super storm wiping humanity off the face of the Earth.

Pikachu is my favorite. I love those big eyes of his.

The Lisa one is good too. I love that episode "Summer of 4 ft. 2." I'm actually writing a story that has Lisa's friends.
